British business activity expanded at its fastest pace in eight months during October, offering a positive signal for the economy despite continued uncertainty over consumer demand, energy costs and the government’s fiscal plans.

According to preliminary S&P Global purchasing managers’ index data released on October 23, the UK composite PMI rose to 53.1 in October from 52.0 in September, reaching its highest level since February.

The result exceeded economists’ expectations of 51.7.

A PMI reading above 50 indicates an expansion in business activity, while a figure below that threshold signals contraction.

The improvement was supported by stronger new business, with companies reporting the fastest increase in new work in approximately two years.

The survey covers activity in manufacturing and services and provides an early indication of economic conditions before official output data become available.

The figures suggest that parts of the British private sector have gained momentum after a period of subdued growth.

However, the improvement does not eliminate broader economic concerns.

Households remain sensitive to living costs, while businesses face uncertainty surrounding energy prices and the outlook for international trade.

Geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, have also raised concerns about potential disruption to energy markets.

Higher energy costs could affect production expenses and consumer purchasing power, potentially weakening the recovery.

The PMI figures are preliminary and may be revised when the final October survey results are published.

They also measure the direction and pace of changes in business activity rather than the exact growth rate of gross domestic product.

For policymakers, the survey provides evidence of improving private-sector momentum, but it is only one indicator among several used to assess the economy.

The sustainability of the improvement will depend on whether stronger new orders translate into continued production, employment and investment.

October’s figures offer a more encouraging picture of British business conditions, although the wider economic outlook remains uncertain.
