Red Sox minor leaguer levels Mets farmhand, setting off wild bench-clearing brawl

by Adam Said April 22, 2022

Let’s get ready to Rumble . . . Ponies.

Oftentimes, bench-clearing brawls in baseball are anything but “brawls.” Typically, they’re just dust-ups at worst, or confrontations at best.

On Thursday, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Mets’ Double-A affiliate) and Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox’s Double-A affiliate) lived up to the “brawl” part.

Pitcher Marcel Renteria hit infielder Tyreque Reed on the hand with a pitch. Some words were shared after that, leading to the 5-11, 185-pound Renteria eating a right hand from the 6-1, 250-pound Reed like a tasty sandwich.

After coming to his senses, Renteria was still seeing red. He executed a double-leg takedown on David Hamilton. The brawl would be defused soon after by Binghamton and Portland players.

Unfortunately, it looks as though Renteria got the worst end of the kerfuffle, as he appeared to have been injured at some point during the ordeal.

Clearly, Reed’s hand was OK, considering he used it to sock Renteria square in the face after the hit by pitch.

If nothing else, Binghamton certainly lived up to its Rumble Ponies nickname.
