West Ham vs. Lyon result and highlights: 10-man Irons battle to impressive draw in Europa League quarter-final first leg
LONDON STADIUM, LONDON β West Ham battled to a 1-1 draw against Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final, despite playing with 10 men for the entire second half.
David Moyesβ well-drilled outfit coped with the possession of their esteemed visitors throughout the first period, before a controversial sending off threatened to swing the game.
A lovely through ball from playmaker Houssem Aouar ended at the feet of Moussa Dembele, who went down, slightly delayed, on the edge of the area thanks to a pull from Aaron Cresswell. The striker winked after the red card was shown to Cresswell, as a raucous home crowd in Stratford vented their fury at the officials.

Jarod Bowen unexpectedly put the Irons in the lead seven minutes after the restart – repaying his managerβs faith, with Said Benrahma sacrificed for substitute left-back Ben Johnson, when it so easily couldβve been Bowen. The English winger capitalised on a huge error from Jerome Boateng, converting from close range to send London Stadium wild.
Lyon responded 14 minutes later, with the impressive Tanguy Ndombele scoring a simple goal. Alphonse Areola parried a Tete ball across the face of goal straight into the path of the ex-Tottenham Hotspur man, who made no mistake.
After hosting their first major European quarter-final in 41 years this evening, Moyes’ men face a quick-fire return in Lyon next Thursday. Awaiting the winner of this tie is a semi-final date with either Frankfurt or the mighty Barcelona.

West Ham vs. Lyon as-it-happened: commentary and highlights
FULL-TIME: It ends 1-1, after an excellent West Ham display in the circumstances. All to play for in France next week!
96th min: West Ham are playing this clock down well, holding Lyon at arm’s length, and the crowd is loving it.
93rd min: Lyon are not creating the sort of chances that would be expected with the man advantage, Dembele now heading over without much threat.
90th min: There will be eight minutes of added time.
86th min: Unbelievable. Another pitch invader stops play – as West Ham are on the attack and looking extremely dangerous. A sustained period of pressure all comes from Bowen’s industry on the right, and a long build ends with the ball at Fornals’ feet on the edge of the area, before the supposed ‘fan’ breaks proceedings.
82nd min: Tireless work from Bowen leads to him getting in behind and capitalising on a loose ball, but his attempted cross to Antonio is held by Lopes.
78th min: More admirable work from Antonio does see a bit of possession for the hosts, and a corner which troubles Lopes. At the other end, a stinging effort from Pacqueta is patted down by Areola.
75th min: A quarter-hour of regulation to go, and the Hammers are holding firm. They’re not seeing the ball, as Ndombele and substitute Karl Toko Ekambi probe, but that’s fully to be expected.
70th min: A pitch invader stops play, in what will no doubt be worth it for a lifetime ban. Well done to security, who poleaxe him as he sprints through midfield.

67th min: He was the man controlling the play for Lyon and the key throughout, but he wasn’t expected to end up on the scoresheet. That’s exactly where Ndombele has landed, though. Some tricky feet from substitute Tete in the box end with him placing a ball across the face of goal, which Areola can only parry out into the path of the oncoming ex-Spurs midfielder, who has the simplest of finishes. We’re all square.
66th min: GOAL! Ndombele equalises.
63rd min: A big chance for the Irons to go two up! Bowen uses his strength to wonderfully breaks down the left, before putting a ball across the area for Antonio, who can’t connect with the ball, almost jumping over it.
58th min: London Stadium is bouncing now. But there’s a slight worry for West Ham, with Fredericks down on the turf receiving treatment in a lengthy stoppage. On the opposite flank, Moyes is in deep conversation with Johnson.
53rd min: Wow! Not many saw that coming at the break. Antonio shows his second-half job, and importance, in the buildup to that goal with some great hold-up play, with Fornals running beyond. After two half-chances, a third passage of play ends with a loose ball in the box that Boateng makes a real hash of. The German’s error falls to the feet of Bowen, who converts via a deflection off Boateng’s outstretched leg on the recovery.

52nd min: GOAL! West Ham take the lead through Bowen!
49th min: This is shaping up to be a backs-to-the-wall job, and a test of Moyes’ superb organisation in one of the very biggest games of his career. Lyon are working around the edge of the box effortlessly, eventually probing on both flanks, though no significant chance as yet.
46th min: The second half is underway. An expected change at half-time to account for the Cresswell red card – Ben Johnson on at left-back, with the lively Benrahma sacrificed.
HALF-TIME: Boos ring out for the officials at the break. An equally-furious Moyes waits for them as they march towards the tunnel, and receives a yellow card of his own.

47th min: That is an absolutely massive moment, and one tinged with controversy. Aouar plays a delightful through ball to Dembele, who seems to very slightly delay in throwing himself to the floor after Cresswell put his arm across the striker while on the edge of the area.
47th min: RED CARD! Aaron Cresswell is off!
45th min: The half peters out with Ndombele – formerly of local rivals Tottenham Hotspur, of course – the latest Lyon man to cause a prolonged stoppage by hitting the deck, and attract the ire of the home fans.
40th min: After another few minutes of Lyon dictating, Fredericks puts in a meaty challenge and seems to butt heads with Emerson, but both men escape punishment.
35th min: West Ham fans – and manager David Moyes – are completely exasperated with the referee. Three times he’s blown as Lyon defenders fall to the ground, the latest being Jerome Boateng after a collision with Fornals. The former Bayern Munich star is roundly booed after a swift recovery.
32nd min: A corner straight off the training ground nearly pays off for the hosts. Rice collects the ball very deep and puts a soft effort directly through the penalty area, which just needed the slightest touch to divert in.
29th min: Pablo Fornals has not had too much opportunity to get on the ball – but has shown nice touches when he has. The latest smart swivel and first-time pass to Benrahma ends in another effort on goal.
24th min: Ndombele and Rice are two Rolls-Royce midfielders going head-to-head here, but it’s the former into slightly more of a rhythm as Lyon boss the ball and control the tempo. The crowd have been quietened by the visitors, but still Alphonse Areola hasn’t been forced into a save.
18th min: After another bout of patient Lyon buildup, the Irons again go route one. Michail Antonio uses his commanding frame to win a header that plays in Benrahma, who makes a return pass but Antonio’s shot is dealt with.
15th min: The tempo of the game had slowed significantly to suit Lyon, but West Ham just ignited it again with one long ball. A simply magnificent first touch from Said Benrahma to control it on the run sets up a chance for a left-footed shot, but Anthony Lopes saves.
10th min: First chance of note goes to Lyon. Lucas Pacqueta breaks left and beats the offside trap to put the ball across the face of goal, but Dembele’s attempt is blocked at close range.
7th min: Fredericks already knows he’s in for a huge night against Aouar, who is seeing the ball early doors. His first break into the box ends in a cross to nobody at the back post, but it’s a warning sign.
3rd min: West Ham making the first inroads into the opposition third, though nothing concrete. The home fans making this place an absolute cauldron.
KICK-OFF: We are underway in East London!

10 mins to KO: As “Freed from Desire” blasts out of the loudspeakers, there is a real party atmosphere here. This is the team of a generation, the game of a generation – and these fans know it.
15 mins to KO: Despite their lowly league position, Lyon come into this tie in a relatively strong run of away form. Les Gones have lost just one of the last eight on the road, and that came against Monaco.
30 mins to KO: As the atmosphere begins to build here in the former Olympic Stadium, there’ll be a fair few Irons fans old enough to remember their last major European quarter-final, which came against Dinamo Tbilisi back in 1980/81. The exited the European Cup Winners’ Cup 4-2 on aggregate, having made that competition via winning the 1980 FA Cup.
50 mins to KO: Moyes has used his programme notes to stress how big a step up tonight is for the Hammers: “This represents a completely different dynamic, a gear change from the last round when the second leg was in our home stadium. Tonight, we must demonstrate a level of maturity and experience as we face a very good Lyon side.”
1 hour 10 mins to KO: Lyon’s XI is here too, and looking as strong as expected.

1 hour 15 mins to KO: The West Ham XI is in. The biggest surprise perhaps is Ryan Fredericks starting, while a major boost comes in the form of Jarrod Bowen returning after missing the Sevilla victory.

1 hour 40 mins to KO: In his programme notes, West Ham club captain Mark Noble wrote: “Saying it and doing it are two totally different things… But we’re learning with every game we play and round we get through, and we’ve shown we are quick learners. We can’t win the tie tonight, but we can potentially lose it.”
2 hours to KO: Welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of West Ham vs. Lyon. We are live at London Stadium, in Stratford’s 2012 Olympic Park, for what Irons fans will hope is the first of many European quarter-finals in their relatively-new home.
Despite facing Champions League regulars and seven-time kings of France, West Ham approach this tie with confidence, rather than an underdog mentality.
The Hammers breezed through their Europa League group with 13 points from their first five games, being afforded the luxury of effectively playing the reserves for a narrow matchday-six loss to Dinamo Zagreb. Then came March’s stirring comeback against Sevilla in the round of 16, overturning a 1-0 first-leg deficit to progress 2-1 on aggregate.
Having fallen out of the top-four chase in the Premier League, glory in this competition represents West Ham’s best chance of an unlikely Champions League spot for next term.
Lyon, though, of course present a huge obstacle. Peter Bosz’s men came through a tough group featuring Rangers with a mammoth 16 points, before defeating FC Porto 2-1 on aggregate last month.
Their awful campaign in Ligue 1 sees Les Gones in 9th spot, so their eggs are firmly in the Europa League basket. With a squad featuring the likes of Moussa Dembele, Tanguy Ndombele and Houssem Aouar, there’s plenty to fear.
