Villarreal vs Bayern Munich results, highlights & analysis: Arnaut Danjuma scores as Unai Emery’s side secure impressive victory
Arnaut Danjuma was the hero as Villarreal produced a superb performance to beat Bayern Munich 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.
It was widely anticipated that Bayern would prevail, but Villarreal worked assiduously to close their opponents down and limit the threat of the likes of Robert Lewandowski.
Villarreal created plenty of openings themselves, with Francis Coquelin having a goal disallowed for offside, while Gerard Moreno hit the post and Alfonso Pedraza missed a good chance.
Bayern will be hugely disappointed with their display but will be determined to respond in the second leg at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern tried their utmost in the second half with Leroy Sane entering the fray, but they were still unable to break Villarreal down.
Although they still have much work to do in order to reach the semi-finals, this was a heroic effort from Villarreal, of which they can be very proud.
Albiol and Torres set the tone defensively
Unai Emery’s side were extremely well organised, with the likes of Raul Albiol and Pau Torres defending diligently.
Albiol used his experience as he read the game excellently and made it difficult for Lewandowski to get many touches in the penalty area.
Torres, meanwhile, is continuing to excel and it is no surprise that he is being linked with clubs such as Manchester United. The Spain international is fearless and demonstrated tonight that he is capable of performing extremely well even when up against some of the standout attacking players in world football.
Davies’ return offers encouragement for Bayern
On a difficult night for Bayern, there was at least one positive to take from proceedings, with Alphonso Davies making his first appearance December after he was diagnosed with mild myocarditis.
It will inevitably take time for Davies to get back up to full sharpness, but he did make a couple of encouraging bursts down the left flank while on another occasion he reacted quickly to cut out the danger.
Bayern will hope that Davies will be able to play a major part in the remainder of the season, including in the second leg against Villarreal.
