Ukraine live briefing: Zelensky pushes for more aid in Munich; White House says will support Ukraine ‘for as long as it takes’
MUNICH — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Western leaders Friday to “speed up” their support for Kyiv in its fight against Russia. “There is no alternative to speed. Because it’s what saves lives,” he said at the Munich Security Conference.
“He’s a commander in chief in a time of war, a war he didn’t ask for,” John Kirby, communications coordinator for the National Security Council, said at a briefing in response to Zelensky’s remarks. “And we know that the time is critical here, particularly the time in the wintertime now when the fighting is not quite as widespread across the country.”
Vice President Harris and Secretary of State Antony Blinken were also in Munich to attend the annual gathering of global political and defense leaders. Harris met Friday with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. “The Vice President reaffirmed that the United States would support Ukraine for as long as it takes,” according to a White House readout of her meeting with Macron.
Here’s the latest on the war and its ripple effects across the globe.
But nearly a year later, the military resources have been impacted by aid shipments to Ukraine and forces are in a worse place, Germany’s new defense minister, Boris Pistorius, told The Post’s Loveday Morris, Kate Brady and David L. Stern. “Given the rate at which materiel and weapons and ammunition are being provided, it’s impossible to reorder and deliver again,” Pistorius said.
