The Arab Group hails the King’s sustained efforts in favor of the Palestinian cause
The Arab Group at the United Nations praised, on Monday, the sustained efforts of King Mohammed VI, Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, in favor of the Palestinian question.
This statement was made by the Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Jordan to the United Nations, Mahmoud Daifallah Hmoud, who chairs the Arab Group for the month of August, during a meeting of the Security Council devoted to the latest events in the Gaza Strip.
The Jordanian ambassador pointed out that the recent escalation in Gaza reflects a situation that cannot last, namely the absence of the two-state solution as the only way to establish an independent Palestinian state, sovereign and geographically connected, on the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
This solution is the only way to resolve the conflict and achieve a just and comprehensive peace, he said, noting that “peace will not be achieved by undermining the two-state solution through continued settlements, confiscation of land and the expulsion of Palestinians from their homes”.
“Peace and security for all require a return to serious and effective negotiations to achieve a two-state solution, which embodies the independent and sovereign Palestinian state on the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital , in accordance with the resolutions of international legitimacy and the Security Council and the Arab Peace Initiative”, indicated the Jordanian diplomat.
The Arab Group also claims “the centrality of the Palestinian cause for the entire Arab world, as well as the Arab, Islamic and Christian identity of occupied Al-Quds-East, capital of the State of Palestine”said the ambassador, adding that the Group also insists on the right of Palestine to enjoy full sovereignty over all of its territories occupied in 1967, including Al-Quds East, its air and maritime space as well as as its natural resources and its borders with neighboring countries.
He also stressed the need for immediate international action to stop the escalation, the catastrophic consequences of which will affect everyone.
Furthermore, the Arab Group welcomed the truce in Gaza, while commending the role of Egypt on this issue. He also thanked Qatar and the United States for their role in restoring calm and security in the Gaza Strip.
The Panel further highlighted the continued efforts of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to preserve the historical and legal status of Islamic and Christian holy sites under the Hashemite tutelage of King Abdullah of Jordan.
