The 25th edition of the 4L Trophy rally set off from Biarritz to Marrakech
The adventure is above all human, sporting and united and we cannot define otherwise the 4L Trophy, the 1st student rally raid in Europe. The event has become a must for young people in France over its 25 editions, with thousands of participants each year.
After two years of absence, Dame Covid obliges, the 4L Trophy rally raid is back. The big day has finally arrived and this Thursday, May 5, some 857 Renault 4Ls and as many crews, and more than twice as many participants from more than 1,200 schools, set off from Biarritz in the Basque Country for a 10-day journey. They set off to attack the Moroccan desert which will take them to the desert of Merzouga before heading towards Marrakech. Initially scheduled for February 2022, it was postponed until after the opening of the borders and young students, more determined than ever, have indeed left for an adventure that will most certainly count in their lives.
These are all elements that make the Raid 4L Trophy the biggest sporting and solidarity student raid in Europe. This rally, created in 1997 by Jean-Jacques Rey, is a cool orienteering rally, a joyous caravan of a thousand 4Ls which ventures to the dunes of the Sahara. It is the biggest meeting of young people and students, the ultimate event of all challenges, the biggest sporting and solidarity event in Europe dedicated to 18/28 year olds, of all nationalities… Each year it brings together a large group of friends (up to 2400!) and as many compasses, who cross Spain and discover Morocco together, from Tangier to the Atlas, from Merzouga to Ouarzazate, from the Tizi N’Tichka pass to Marrakech.
On the program for the crews, 6,000 kilometers of roads and tracks through France, Spain and Morocco, with the finish in the ocher city in sight. The criteria for participating in this event are simple. All you need is to be a student, aged 18 to 28, holder of a B permit, have a valid passport and the doors to adventure will magically open. But these kids aren’t just here for fun. They all came with donations for the children of the Moroccan desert (the crews take on board their 4L equipment and school supplies intended for the poorest children in Morocco). Because we must not lose sight of the fact that the objective is above all humanitarian and solidarity-based. Reaching out to others, reaching out to them, these are all gestures that will make young people more responsible and give them a sense of accomplishment.
This action is also intended to be a great eco-citizen initiation because the protection of the environment is not left out. The organization is committed as always to leaving the desert free of any trace of the passage of the competitors and implements effective means to reduce the impact of this escapade. Thus through the “clean desert” operation, the waste is collected by a garbage truck which follows the caravan throughout the raid. The latter will be offered to the authorities of Merzouga by the association “cap eco solidaire“.
So much for the decor! The 4L Trophy raid is lived, we say, it is not told. For ten days, time stands still. Against a backdrop of sumptuous landscapes, we move forward, we help each other, we meet, we discuss and we inevitably come out different say the seniors, some of whom are still taking part, oh nostalgia… as seasoned guides.
