Security: Madrid need Rabat according to an expert
Security cooperation between Morocco and Spain should develop in the coming months thanks to the bilateral agreement adopted on the sidelines of the visit of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to Morocco, according to a security expert.
“Cooperation between Madrid and Rabat will be consolidated in the coming period,” said security expert Mohamed Al Tayyar, commenting on the recent meeting between King Mohammed VI and the Spanish chief executive in Rabat.
“Madrid was betting on strategic choices that did not differ significantly from the strategic objectives of the Algerian military regime”, noted the analyst, estimating that faced with changes at international and regional levels in Morocco’s position and weight, the country Iberian could not find a solution to the diplomatic crisis created following the reception of Brahim Ghali in Spain.
According to him, following the crisis linked to Brahim Ghali, the Iberian country resolved to “return to its ally Rabat” and “knew how to transcend its traditional position on the question of the Sahara, which lasted more than 47 years”. .
The academic also believes that “Madrid needs Rabat because of the country’s internal situation”, and stressed that “security and military cooperation was included in the agreement which was published in the Spanish Official Gazette”, recalling in this regard that in 2019, a Spanish military delegation arrived in Morocco in order to sign a strategic agreement in the fields of shipbuilding and the aeronautical industry.
If the security and military cooperation between the two neighboring kingdoms did not stop during these 10 months of crisis, it nevertheless showed a delay and did not continue towards the achievement of ambitious objectives as it could have been. case.
However, following the opening of the new stage in bilateral relations inaugurated Thursday evening with the visit of Pedro Sanchez who described the agreement with Morocco as “historic” and “necessary”, the strategic partnership between Rabat and Madrid are expected to step up and reach never-before-seen levels.
The two countries will have to respect the terms of the joint declaration by not taking any unilateral action and ensuring respect for mutual interests.
According to the professor, the results of this new stage announce promising prospects and “will be reflected positively in the areas of the fight against terrorism and irregular migration”, noting that “Madrid faces a number of regional security challenges and interior”.
In addition, he explains that “the return of relations would strengthen cooperation in the field of security”, adding that “the agreements reached will be a factor in dispelling the fear that has prevailed in certain Spanish circles, who have become worried about the strength of the Morocco “.
