RS Berkane in search of a second trophy
Berkane’s Renaissance Sportive, the last national representative in the CAF Cup, will stop at nothing to win against Al Masry of Egypt in the quarter-finals, with the aim of lifting a second trophy.
RSB will face Egypt’s Al Masry again in the quarter-finals of the competition on Sunday at the Burj Al Arab Stadium in Alexandria.
The first leg in Alexandria, which will be played in front of 10,000 spectators, will be led by Malian referee Bobo Traoré, assisted by Burkinabé Seydou Tiama, Nigerien Mamadou Gado and Congolese Jean-Jacques Ndala, while video refereeing (VAR) will be led by the Algerian referee Mehdi Abeid and his compatriot Mokran Jourari, appointed assistant referee.
Crowned champion in 2020, the RS Berkane club is looking for a second trophy at continental level, while Ali Maher’s men aim to win their first continental title.
This is not the first confrontation between RS Berkane and Al Masry. The two teams had already played four games in the same African competition (one victory for each team and two draws).
The Berkanis joined this round by finishing first in their group with 10 points, ahead of the Tanzanian club Simba Sports (direct confrontations in favor of RS Berkane). With 11 goals scored and 9 conceded, they completed the group stage with 3 wins, a draw and 2 losses.
The Oriental club had secured its place in the group stage by taking over Ben Guerdane’s US (4-1) at the end of the first and second legs of the preliminary round of the competition.
RS Berkane then confirmed its ticket to the group stage after its victory by 2 goals to 1 against the Rwandan Patriotic Army (APR FC), in the second leg of the second preliminary round, played at the municipal stadium of Berkane. The two teams had drawn (0-0) in the Rwandan capital Kigali.
The Egyptian formation of Ali Maher, for its part, finished the group stage in second position with 10 points, just behind TP Mazembe (11 points). With 5 goals scored and 3 conceded in six games, they finished the group stage with 3 wins, a draw and 2 losses.
The Egyptian club snatched their place in the group stage by beating Ugandan club Rivinho with an unanswered goal before then eliminating the Nigerian team Rivers (1-2 / 1-0)
The winner of this Arab duel, the second round of which is scheduled in Berkane on April 24, will be opposed to the winner of the clash between the Egyptians of Pyramids and the Congolese of TP Mazmebe.
