The NASCAR Cup Series roars back into contention on Sunday with the Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway in Darlington, South Carolina.
Team Penske’s Joey Logano earned the top spot at qualifying Saturday afternoon. Logano hasn’t claimed a win yet this season, but does have five top-10 finishes so far, including a second-place showing in Martinsville and a third-place finish at the Food City Dirt Race in Bristol.
Headlining the second row are Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Christopher Bell and Martin Truex Jr., while Kyle and Kurt Busch make up the third row.
Two racers who will be starting at the back of the pack are former Cup champions Chase Elliott and Kevin Harvick. Elliott suffered a crash during qualifying, while Harvick’s car was damaged after suffering a flat tire.
Reigning Goodyear 400 winner Truex Jr. will be hoping for another strong showing at Darlington. Truex Jr. has claimed two wins and five top-five finishes at the egg-shaped track during his career. The 41-year old hasn’t been in the winner’s circle this year, but a strong showing at the Goodyear 400 could help him rise through the Cup Series rankings. Truex Jr. enters Sunday’s race with the No. 7 in the Cup Series standings, 82 points away from Cup Series leader Elliott.
