Masters food prices: Why pimento cheese sandwiches, other Augusta concession items are so cheap
The eyes of the golf world descend on Augusta National once every spring, each attendee hoping to witness the greatest golfers add to the legacy of the hallowed ground.
The cost of that viewing experience tends to be high: tickets to the Masters can cost as much as $4,000 on the resale market, according to Mike Hall of Golf Monthly.
Yet, the price of food at the tournament stays reasonably low:

The menu, marked by signature items like the pimento cheese sandwich and egg salad, features concessions that exceed no more than six dollars.
It’s a departure from the status quo of other sporting events, where overpriced concessions eat away at consumers’ pockets. The reason why, as Steve Salaga, sports economist and assistant professor of sport management and policy at the University of Georgia, told Fox Business, is rooted in simple economics.
“We have to remember, the total cost of event attendance includes travel and transaction costs, the cost of the ticket itself, as well as any parking, concessions, and souvenirs purchased,” Salaga told FOX Business.
So one way to make the overall experience more appealing to the consumer is to keep the price of these complementary products like concessions low.
With smaller portion sizes and less gluttonous options, the Masters provides onlookers with light, but delectable options, each of which comes at a reduced price tag. Few stick out as much as that pimento cheese, mounded with an assortment of cheeses and spices. Fresh pepper and onion provides a sharp contrast for the richness of the cheese. It’s no wonder the sandwich has sparked a legacy of its own, as Golf Digest’s Sam Weinman explored earlier this year.
Still, whether it’s the gooey pimento cheese, a delicate moon pie or one of the Masters signature craft beers, odds are that fans will be able to delight in their selection — all for a reasonable price, too.
