Man shot dead in Jaffa, bumping 2023 toll of killings in Arab population to 57
A man died of his wounds after being shot in Jaffa, police said on Sunday.
Hashem Hamidi, 19, was shot on Saturday night and then treated at Wolfson Medical Center, where he succumbed to his wounds the next day, according to Hebrew media reports.
A 20-year-old suspect was arrested shortly afterward. Police were set to request from the Tel Aviv District Court to extend the custody of the alleged gunman on Sunday.
According to a preliminary investigation, Hamidi was riding his bike when he was shot. The probe into the incident is ongoing.
Also on Saturday, 19-year-old Wadi Abu Salamish and another man were shot in two separate shootings in Lod.
Police said they were investigating the incidents and held a situational assessment, which included “an analysis of targeted actions against the perpetrators of crime and violent conflict on the Arab street.”

According to the Abraham Initiatives watchdog, Hamidi was the 57th Arab in Israel to be killed in a homicide since the start of the year.
Arab communities have seen a rising wave of violence in recent years. The violence includes family feuds, mafia turf wars, and violence against women. Some blame the police, who they say have failed to crack down on powerful criminal organizations and largely turn a blind eye to the violence.
