British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s party, the Tories, appear to have lost in the last local elections with a fall of 53 seats, according to the first results of the poll.
After numerous scandals that have tarnished the image of the party, in particular that of the end-of-year celebrations in full confinement, the conservatives do not seem to be off to a good start.
The final results of these local councils are expected on Friday and will serve as a test for Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Labour, for their part, won one seat and the Liberal Democrats won 27. The final results will represent a clear idea that the British have of the current government.
It is the biggest poll since the Conservative Party won an overwhelming majority in the 2019 general election. The local council election is also the first since the night party scandals at Downing Street, the leader’s residence of the government, a dossier which has been dubbed “party gate”.
Moreover, several Britons doubt the sincerity of their Prime Minister in his activism for Ukraine. Many think that it is a question of political opportunism or even of war to glean votes and restore its image.
The vote involves nearly 7,000 local councilor seats across the UK. It will determine the composition of 140 local government authorities, which manage public services on a daily basis.
