Attorney General says he ‘personally approved’ search of Trump’s home
Attorney General Merrick Garland said on Thursday he “personally approved” the FBI’s spectacular search of former President Donald Trump’s Florida home, and condemned the “baseless attacks” on his department and federal police after the raid sparked the anger of the Republicans.
During an exceptional press conference, Garland did not reveal anything about the reasons and the results of this operation but he – unusually – announced that he had requested that the search warrant be made public.
“I personally approved the decision to seek a search warrant for this case”said Garland during a short and rare televised intervention.
“The ministry does not take this kind of decision lightly”he added, specifying that it had been approved by a federal judge.
Emphasizing that “ethical obligations” prevented him from detailing the reasons for the raid, Garland said he asked a Florida judge to lift the confidentiality of the warrant after Trump publicly confirmed the search and in view of “the significant public interest in this matter.”
Trump has until Friday to contest the request.
