330,000 students leave school every year in Morocco
Revealing data on school wastage in Morocco were presented by Chakib Benmoussa, Minister of National Education, Preliminary Education and Sports.
In this regard, Benmoussa revealed, during a presentation he made to members of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Education, Culture and Communication, that approximately 330,000 pupils and students of the classroom each year, adding that “These data and facts negatively affect the human development indicators in our country given the close link between the reality of the education system and Morocco’s position in the ranks of human development in general“.
The Minister of National Education, Primary Education and Sports, on the same occasion, indicated that the Ministry is working on the generalization of primary education, which would reduce the phenomenon of school dropout.
Benmoussa indicated that the ministry will take several measures to achieve the objectives set to ensure the generalization of a modern, equitable, inclusive and quality primary education.
These measures are reflected in the pursuit of the objectives set in the National Program for the Development of Primary Education and the balance of the gains made, which are mainly reflected in the high rate of schooling with this type of education, since it has gone from 45.3% enrolled during the 2017-2018 academic year to 71.3 for the 2020-2021 season.
The number of primary education incubator departments increased from 37,298 in the 2017-2018 academic year to 45,157 departments in the current academic year.
Among them, approximately 16,834 departments come under the public primary sector, 12,181 departments come under the private sector and 6,519 departments are distinguished by the intervention of partners.
The ministry is also working to expand the offer through the completion of approximately four thousand to five thousand primary education units, in order to achieve the generalization of this education for children between four and five years old by 2028.
The Minister of National Education, Primary Education and Sports also confirmed that the ministry will work to improve the quality of primary education.
This is to ensure the selection of educators who have the necessary skills to carry out the tasks of activating the departments of primary education and to establish a system of basic training of educators specialized in primary education which includes comprehensive elements allowing the beneficiary of the training to acquire the necessary skills and abilities that enable him to activate the departments of primary education.
In another context, Chakib Benmoussa has undertaken to interact positively with the recommendations of the Competition Council concerning private education.
Benmoussa explained that the ministry has started a meeting with the head of the Competition Council and members who oversaw a study on private education in Morocco, to discuss the content of the council’s opinion, interact with its proposals and recommendations, and to include the most important results of the document in the vision of reform that we are about to formulate.
The government official noted that the ministry also takes into consideration the most important recommendations of the aforementioned council while drafting the law on education in private schools.
On the other hand, Benmoussa revealed that a working meeting was held with the representative bodies of private school education establishments in Morocco on January 31, 2022, in order to study the situation of private school education.
