Austria vs. Turkey live score: Euro 2024 updates, result after Demiral gives Turks 1st-minute lead
Merih Demiral scored after 57 seconds as the concluding Euro 2024 last-16 clash between Austria and Turkey instantly lived up to its billing.
After a round largely dominated by cagey, tense affairs, two of the group stage’s most entertaining sides squared off and instantly opted to fight fire with fire.
Austria had already raided into the Turkey box before conceding the corner from which Arder Guler’s skimming delivery caused havoc and Demiral slammed into the roof of the net. It was the second-fastest goal in Euros history and the quickest ever in the knockout stages.
Christoph Baumgartner fired wide as Ralf Rangnick’s side went in search of an instant response. Turkey then struggled to deal with a couple of corners themselves before Guler tried to score form the halfway line. It had already turned into that kind of night.
The winners will face the Netherlands in Berlin on Saturday after Ronald Koeman’s men beat Romania 3-0.

Halftime
Ooohhh, Baumgartner stabs just wide and Turkey’s lead remains intact at the break. It would have taken brave person to suggest a 1-0 scoreline after Demiral scored inside a minute and both sides went at each other hell for leather. As the pace finally slowed, it seemed to suit Turkey and their 45 minutes away from the quarters.
42 mins: Yuksek goes flailing after Baumgartner. That’s a foul and a yellow card. He’ll miss the quarters if Turkey go through.
36 mins: Sabitzer the man trying to make things happen, skips down the left and Demiral thumps his cross away.
32 mins: Sabitzer cuts inside and has a shot blocked. Apart from their initial frenzied rally after going behind, Austria have struggled to cause their opponents too much trouble.
26 mins: Yilmaz off and into a bundling dribble. Still going and scattering Austria defenders. His delivery is too high for Yildiz.
24 mins: Austria half clear but Turkey win a corner off Baumgartner. Guler trots over to the flank where he created the opener. It’s cleared behind. Another great delivery and Demiral heads over.
23 mins: Scruffy few minutes from Austria and Posch bundles Yildiz over. Decent crossing position on the left for Turkey. Or Guler might shoot?
19 mins: Turkey break, Guler has options ahead of him but sees Pentz off his line. He goes for it, from the halfway line. It’s wide, it’s a silly idea but that’s just the vibe tonight. Why not go with it?
14 mins: Guler twisting and turning in the right channel after Turkey get through the Austria press. It’s a teasing delivery and Danso gets there in front of his goalkeeper to hack away. Fire is being fought with fire over and over. This is fantastic.
12 mins: Sabitzer’s free-kick spins off the wall and behind for a corner. The delivery is deep, back it goes to Schmid, whose low cross is booted clear.
11 mins: Kokcu brings down the dangerous Baumgartner and gets a booking. He’ll miss the quarterfinal if Turkey get through. Not the last time you’ll hear that hypothetical tonight.
8 mins: Pentz fires a pass with far too much heat on it at Mwene. It’s a Turkey throw deep in Austrian territory that they can’t make the most of.
7 mins: Off we go again with another Austria corner. Nope, no one’s bothering to defend these tonight. Leinhart gets up and puts a free header over.
5 mins: Oh my word, Austria almost level! Sabitzer’s corner skids through everyone, Baumgartner can’t convert at the far post, with which he collides. He’ll need some treatment.
3 mins: Austria look to hit straight back and Baumgartner fizzes a drive narrowly wide. This is already more entertaining than both yesterday’s games.
1 min: GOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!
What a start! Austria make an unsightly mess of trying to deal with Guler’s corner and Demiral slams into the roof of the net.

Kickoff: 1st Half
We’re away. Gunok has to come straight out to claim a through ball, then Turkeyt fly up the other end to win a corner. Hold onto your hats.
4 mins before kickoff: The teams are out and it’s anthems time at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig – a venue that knows Rangnick’s tactical stylings very well.
15 mins before kickoff: Pre-tournament friendlies don’t tend to count for much once we get down to the serious business of knockout football. However, it feels like we can make a slight exception here. In the March international break, Austria hammered Turkey 6-1 om Wein. Michael Gregoritsch scored a hat-trick that night and is only on the bench here. Nothing to worry about then, lads…
30 mins before kickoff: Austria are favourites tonight having impressed with their high-octane style. But if they reach the quarterfinals, they are unlikely to do so completely unscathed. Ralf Rangnick’s side have a remarkable eight players on a yellow card. If any of them are booked tonight they will be banned for the weekend meeting with the Netherlands in Berlin if they get there.

50 mins before kickoff: It’s hard to see beyond this one being a thriller given what these teams have thrown up so far. There’s understandably a lot of talk around the lavishly gifted Real Madrid youngster Arda Guler and he’s joined by another teenager in the Turkey attack tonight, Juventus’ Kenan Yildiz.

1 hr 5 mins before kickoff: A late double from Donyell Malen has given the Netherlands a resounding 3-0 victory. Malen put through his own goal as Austria beat the Oranje 3-2 in their final group game. Can Ralf Rangnick’s men get the win here to set up a rematch?
1 hr 30 mins before kickoff: The winners of this game tonight will take on the victors from the ongoing quarterfinal in Munich. The Netherlands lead Romania with 20 minutes remaining. It’s 1-0 thanks to Cody Gakpo’s first half goal but the Dutch are well on top and have missed a string of chances during the second half. Will they live to regret it?

2 hours before kickoff: If there’s one thing Austria can’t be accused of doing at Euro 2024, it’s parking the bus. Can Ralf Rangnick’s team produce another stirring performance against Turkey, or will Real Madrid’s Arda Guler drive his team to the quarterfinals?
