Toronto Stocks Fall as Mining and Technology Shares Weigh on TSX

Canada’s main stock index declined on Thursday as losses in mining and technology shares weighed on the market, reversing part of the previous session’s gains.

According to Reuters, the S&P/TSX Composite Index fell approximately 0.8% to 36,032.84 points in early trading, retreating from a four-week high reached on Wednesday.

Mining shares came under pressure as gold and copper prices weakened, affecting companies with significant exposure to precious and industrial metals.

Technology stocks also declined amid renewed concerns about the scale of artificial intelligence investment and the ability of major technology companies to generate sufficient returns.

The weakness followed quarterly results from major U.S. technology companies that failed to ease investor concerns about spending on AI infrastructure.

Canadian equities are particularly sensitive to changes in commodity markets because mining and energy companies account for a substantial part of the Toronto market.

The decline also came after the Canadian government announced a multibillion-dollar support package for industries affected by U.S. tariffs, which had helped lift investor sentiment during the previous session.

Market participants continued to monitor developments in global trade, corporate earnings and commodity prices.

The reported index level reflects early trading on October 22 and is not the official closing figure.

Further movements during the session could change the market’s final daily performance.
