LIVE: Final teams locked in for do-or-die Origin clash
Storm legend Billy Slater will have a nice full-circle moment on Wednesday night when he coaches the Maroons for the first time in the city he calls home.
Despite being a staunch Queenslander, Slater has resided in Melbourne for the past two decades after moving to the Storm as a youngster and beginning his NRL career.
Fast-forward to 2024 and Slater is now leading his state into a huge State of Origin clash at one of the world’s most iconic sporting venues.
“I’m really proud of the club that I played for and my contribution to rugby league down here in Victoria,” he said on Tuesday.
“I’ve called Melbourne home for the last two decades. It’s given me an opportunity to fulfil my dream … the Melbourne Storm gave me that opportunity.
“It’s a great opportunity to come down here and show our Queensland passion in a state that I live in now.
“What an opportunity for 34 players to go out into a coliseum, a real iconic venue. They get to perform in front of nearly 100,000 people, so that is pretty exciting.”
Current stars Harry Grant and Xavier Coates will also run out at the MCG for the first time in the careers as Origin returns to the venue for the first time since 2018.
“One thing with Melbournians that I’ve felt over the last few years is how much they love sport,” Grant said.
“I know it’s AFL heartland, but all sport in general they really get behind it. It’s very special for us as players to be able to be given the opportunity to play the MCG.”
