When will Erik ten Hag be announced as Man United manager? Ajax coach’s release clause, contract details and transfer demands
Media reports in England and the Netherlands have claimed that Erik ten Hag will become Manchester United’s next manager and it is simply a case now of when it will be announced by the Premier League club.
Ten Hag has been Ajax head coach since 2017, but he has been heavily linked with the job at Old Trafford since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired in November.
Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino was the other leading candidate, but it appears Ten Hag is now set to take over after the end of the season from interim United manager Ralf Rangnick.

When will Erik ten Hag be announced as Man United manager?
There are various reports on when and in what form Ten Hag’s unveiling as the new manager will be made by United. It appears likely it would not be announced until April 18 at least, given Ajax’s commitments this season.
Ajax are in the KNVB Beker final on that day, taking on PSV in Rotterdam as they attempt to retain a trophy they have won 20 times before.
Ajax and Ten Hag not unreasonably want to focus on that game and allow developments on the future of the club’s coach to be dealt with in the days after.

What is Erik ten Hag’s release clause at Ajax?
The Mirror have claimed that a clause was written into Ten Hag’s most recent contract renewal at Ajax that means United do not to have to break the bank to bring him to England.
A get-out clause was reportedly part of Ten Hag’s two-year extension deal signed in 2021 and anyone seeking his services has to pay £1.68 million (€2m) for the contract to be broken.
The Athletic claim United have not yet come to an agreement with Ajax for Ten Hag but have a verbal understanding with the 52-year-old, with negotiations between clubs now to come.
What are Erik ten Hag’s Man United contract demands?
One of Ten Hag’s main haggling points, according to The Athletic, is that he can bring his own coaching staff to join him at Old Trafford. That is likely to be led be Mitchell van der Gaag, who is his current assistant at Ajax.
Success with bringing through youth talent has been part of Ajax’s success at Ten Hag and it is claimed he will earmark time on working on improving United’s youth and development system.
What are Erik ten Hag’s Man United transfer demands?
Given United’s rather questionable recruitment policy in recent years, which has been more miss than hit, Ten Hag has also made it clear he expects to have a full say in who is brought in once he is in charge.
A lot of work needs to be done to a misfiring squad that sits seventh in the Premier League at present and is set to miss out on Champions League football next season.
At this stage, Ten Hag’s targets will probably be known only to himself and United’s directors, but it would be a surprise if interest in England midfielder Declan Rice was not revived after a move for the West Ham man was heavily rumoured under Solskjaer.
It was reported in England that the new contract for Bruno Fernandes, which was announced on April 1, was approved by Ten Hag.
