UK Government offer major Man United update on Old Trafford expansion

by Adam Said January 26, 2025

Manchester United’s plans to redevelop Old Trafford have been boosted by fresh UK Government support.

The Red Devils hierarchy have been waiting for an update from the Labour Party following their General Election victory in 2024 as the club looks to boost the stadium’s current capacity.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has now confirmed she will “champion” the project in a statement outlining “bold reform” of the UK’s planning system in the coming months.

Reeves’ statement added support for the project will also focus on wider community issues in the area surrounding United’s iconic home ground.

“New housing, commercial and public spaces are also in the plans, as a shining example of the bold pro-development model that will drive growth across the region.”

However, the key notes from the statement stopped short of the Government offering financial support for the redevelopment works, which could take two forms depending on the funds available.

Previous indications from the club hinted a brand-new 100,000-capacity arena being built in the surrounding area – with Old Trafford demolished – but the more likely outcome is adding an extra 12,000 to the 74,310 stadium.

United will consider both avenues before a final decision is made later this year with 2024 fan surveys opting in favour of a new stadium due to the multitude of issues at Old Trafford.

Fans have been forced to endure years of roof leaks, damaged seating and structural issues in the concourses, but a complete fresh start may not be within United’s budget – particularly if they miss out on UEFA Champions League qualification once again.

Old Trafford remains the Premier League ground with the highest fan capacity this season with Wembley Stadium [90,000] the only bigger football arena in the UK.
