Schoolchildren from Rabat discovering their cultural heritage
On the occasion of the International Day for Monuments and Sites, eight of the city’s monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites each simultaneously hosted classes from Rabat colleges, supervised by heritage professionals: archaeologists, architects, curators sites, inspectors of historical monuments.
This day was the culmination of the program “I discover my heritage” launched by the Foundation for the Safeguarding of Cultural Heritage of Rabat, chaired by Lalla Hasnaa, in partnership with the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports, the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication, UNESCO and the World Heritage Center.
Between April 12 and 29, at the rate of four colleges per day in as many monuments of the city, they should be 3720 students from 62 colleges of Rabat, Salé and Temara, to have visited the World Heritage sites: Ramparts and gates Almohades, Qasba of Oudaïa, the medina, Archaeological site of Chellah, Quartier Habous de Diour Jamaâ, New town, the garden of botanical tests, the Hassan mosque.
On the sidelines of the celebration of the International Day for Monuments and Sites and Heritage Month, the Foundation for the Safeguarding of Cultural Heritage in Rabat wants to make this monumental historical heritage known to its inhabitants, especially its youngest. It therefore carries out this operation of education and awareness of heritage by relying on the know-how and expertise of its various partners in order to facilitate access to heritage.
The implementation of the “I discover my heritage” program began initially with the contextualization of the UNESCO kit to the cultural heritage of the local territory and its numerous representations in archaeology, town planning, architecture and nature with the introduction of notions on modern heritage and world heritage.
The activities offered in the educational kit made available to teachers and college students are very diverse, and have been designed to stimulate the imagination of young people, which allows them to discover and build their own perception of cultural heritage.
