Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, an unprovoked act that has led to carnage across the country. The war has displaced more than 5.5 million Ukrainians, mostly the elderly, women and children.
As desperate Ukrainians flee their homes to neighboring NATO member countries — Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania — Russian forces have focused their military might in eastern and southern Ukraine after weeks of stalled ground advances on the capital city of Kyiv.
In the past nine weeks, Russian troops have been beset with a slew of logistical problems on the battlefield, including reports of fuel and food shortages, as well as frostbite.
As it deals with significant setbacks on the battlefield, Moscow faced renewed global outrage after reports of a Russian massacre in Bucha and a missile strike on a crowded train station in Kramatorsk. The Kremlin has described its military actions in Ukraine as a “special operation” and has denied targeting civilians.
The United Nations has confirmed 3,193 civilian deaths and 3,353 injuries in Ukraine since Russia invaded its ex-Soviet neighbor. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has said the death toll in Ukraine is likely higher, as the armed conflict has delayed reporting.
Here is a look at some of the faces and lives affected by Russia’s horrific war.
