The incident comes with security forces on high alert as Israel is facing the deadliest wave of terror attacks in recent years, with 14 people killed in the last two weeks.

On Sunday, A Jewish Israeli man snatched a weapon from a soldier at a junction near Ashkelon before being shot dead by a top military officer, police said, in an incident that underscored tensions in the country.

The man — who was not immediately named — died of his wounds at the scene. The incident was initially thought by many to be a terror attack committed by a Palestinian.
