How Jack Campbell ‘Soup’ chants started and became a rallying cry for the Maple Leafs goalie
If you have been watching the Maple Leafs this season, you’ll notice a chant ringing out anytime their goaltender makes a big save.
No, it’s not the Toronto faithful booing. The fans are yelling “Soup!” in honor of goaltender Jack Campbell.

The 30-year-old has become a fan favorite with the Maple Leafs, especially towards the end of the 2020-21 season. In his first full year as the starter, Campbell continues to gain the support of the team’s following, and has become known in the Toronto community as “Soup” or “Soupy”.
His nickname also allows social media teams to capitalize on the opportunity to use the famous Seinfeld line of “No soup for you!” whenever Campbell posts a shutout.

Low and behold, the NHL got a chance to use the phrase in Campbell’s latest performance, as he stopped all 23 shots he faced in the Maple Leafs’ 5-0 win in Game 1 against the Lightning.

Campbell had an up-and-down regular season while also dealing with a rib injury, but if he can continue to play the way he did in the first game of the playoffs, you will be hearing plenty more “Soup” chants during Maple Leafs games.
What is Jack Campbell’s nickname?
Campbell has affectionately become known as “Soup” or “Soupy.”
On occasion he has also been referred to as “JC”, but that’s not as fun to cheer after a big save.

Why do Maple Leafs fans call Jack Campbell ‘Soup’?
The nickname stems from the connection between the goaltender’s last name of Campbell and the Campbell soup company.
It originated when Campbell came over in a trade from the Kings in 2020. While he was used primarily as a backup to Frederik Andersen at the time, he eventually won the starting job.
He has since become a fan favorite and with Andersen leaving the Leafs in free agency last summer, Campbell has become the bonafide No. 1 goalie for Toronto.
The “Soup” chants started earlier this season, which Campbell made sure to express his appreciation for.
