Geno Smith’s contract with Seahawks initially disapproved by NFL, but ‘the issue will be fixed’
The Seahawks announced that they had re-signed veteran quarterback Geno Smith on Tuesday, but a snag in his initial contract agreement briefly held up his reunion with the team.
Smith’s original contract with Seattle was disapproved by the NFL. The league announced this in its daily transaction wire release, which stated that the Seahawks had signed Smith but the NFL hadn’t approved the contract.

The NFL has final say on all contracts, so no deal becomes official until the league approves it. This is rarely a problem, but evidently the league found something it didn’t like in Smith’s contract.
It’s unclear exactly what the issue was with Smith’s contract. The details of his contract were reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who said that Smith is set to make $3.5 million with $500,000 guaranteed over the one-year contract. Smith also has an additional $3.5 million he can earn via incentives.

Whatever the problem was, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that “the issue will be fixed.” As such, Smith will wear a Seahawks uniform once again in 2022.

Smith, a 10-year veteran, started three games for Seattle last season, posting a 1-2 record and completing 68.4 percent of his passes for 702 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. With Russell Wilson now in Denver, Smith is looking forward to battling for the starting quarterback job with Drew Lock, Jacob Eason and whoever else the Seahawks bring in.
“I’ve been working my butt off,” Smith said Tuesday, per Seahawks.com. “I’ve been preparing as if I was a starter for 10 years now, so it doesn’t change anything for me; the opponent is just different. So I’m excited to be able to put my work on display, but overall my mentality has been the same.
“Competition brings out the best in all of us, so I’m extremely excited, I look forward to it. I can’t wait for the fans and everybody else to see it. It’s going to be a lot different than what it’s been the last nine or 10 years with Russell in Seattle, but all in all, I still prepare the same.”
