Cowboys named blockbuster ‘landing spot’ for $13 million superstar running back
The NFL trade deadline is drawing nearer by the hour, and the Dallas Cowboys have remained quiet all along.
With just five days remaining until the market closes, the Cowboys have gaping holes all over their roster. But the most obvious of those holes is running back, which has been a problem position given Tony Pollard’s departure in free agency.
Without a ground game, the 3-4 Cowboys have been forced to rely more than ever on the right arm of Dak Prescott, who has responded with a bushel of interceptions. If they don’t add a quality rusher at the trade deadline, Dallas is as good as finished for the season.
Fortunately, there is one 1,000-yard rusher who should be available for a reasonable price. Tyler Dragon of USA Today recently named Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne as a fit for the Cowboys on the trade block.
“An Etienne trade can give Jacksonville additional draft compensation. The running back has trade value around the NFL. He’s surpassed 1,400 yards from scrimmage in his first two seasons and he’s just 25 years old,” Dragon said.
“The Cowboys rank dead last in the NFL in rushing. They average just 3.4 yards a carry. Ezekiel Elliott is past his prime and Rico Dowdle isn’t a starting caliber running back. The Cowboys miss Tony Pollard, who they let walk in free agency following 2023. Etienne would immediately step in and fill the void at RB.”
After rushing for over 2,100 yards and 16 touchdowns his first two seasons, Etienne has dealt with a nagging hamstring injury this season and ceded time to Tank Bigsby in the Jaguars backfield. But Dallas has no one nearly as talented as Bigsby, so Etienne would be back to assuming bell-cow duties.
Etienne is in the final season of his four-year, $12.8 million rookie deal, so the Cowboys would have the option to let him walk or pursue a reunion in free agency if the fit turns out to be ideal. But first things first: The Cowboys need the former Clemson star to come in and turn their 2024 season around.
