Bayern Munich vs. Villarreal result & highlights: Villarreal and Chukwueze shock Bayern Munich to reach UEFA Champions League semi-finals
Substitute Samuel Chukwueze was the hero for Villarreal as they shocked Bayern Munich to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
Chukwueze had been on the pitch for only four minutes when he got on the end of Gerard Moreno’s cross to find the net and earn Unai Emery’s side a 1-1 draw on the night and a 2-1 victory on aggregate in the quarter-final tie.
After stifling Bayern in a goalless first half in the Allianz Arena it had looked as if the Bundesliga leaders would prevail after Robert Lewandowski’s smart finish six minutes after the restart had got the game back level on aggregate.
Bayern were left to reflect on not doing enough with all their possession in the final third with Thomas Muller guilty of wasting their best chance to win the tie as he nodded wide when completely unmarked.
Villarreal again demonstrated the European pedigree that saw them win the Europa League last season as they held their nerve, kept battling and were rewarded with Chukwueze’s late heroics.

Bayern Munich vs. Villarreal commentary & highlights
Full-time: Villarreal have done it! 1-1 on the night but 2-1 on aggregate. Another night of European glory for Emery and they now face either Liverpool or Benfica for a place in the final.
90 minutes: What have Bayern got left? They look shellshocked. There is four minutes of stoppage time.
88 minutes: GOAL!!!!! Chukwueze!!!!
Unbelievable! Villarreal are back in front. On the break they hit Bayern and Chukwueze mishits his shot at far post but it bobbles past Manuel Neuer and into the net. 2-1 to Villarreal on aggregate.
84 minutes: That is Danjuma’s last act as he is taken off with Alfonso Pedraza coming on for him, while Emery also changes Samuel Chukwueze for Francis Coquelin.
Bayern have also made two changes with Serge Gnabry and Alphonso Davies on for Hernadez
80 minutes: Ten to go and still we are on for extra time. Villarreal are still a threat on the break and Danjuma gets away on the right but drags his shot across the goal and wide.
75 minutes: Coman cuts in from left and fizzes a drive just over the bar. Bayern are still pushing hard and Villarreal’s defenders are starting to look a little jaded.
71 minutes: That should be Bayern ahead. Sane again is excellent on the right flank and he finds an unmarked Muller in the middle, but the German mistimes his header horribly and it bounces wide.
67 minutes: Villarreal’s turn to have a bit of officiating generosity as Foyth is not booked a second time after clearly felling Coman with a challenge arguably worse than the one that got him a first yellow.
65 minutes: Villarreal are still playing like they are ahead. Defending in numbers and pumping balls up when they can for Danjuma to chase.
To be fair extra time and penalties will not be unappealing to them considering their epic spot-kick triumph over Manchester United in the Europa League final last May.
62 minutes: Just a reminder if it stays this way at 1-0 to Bayern we are going to extra time. Hard to see Villarreal holding out right now to get to that stage as Bayern are dominant with Sane and Coman getting to their respective bylines at will.

Who else but Robert Lewandowski?! 🎯

59 minutes: Juan Foyth is the first Villarreal player booked after he feels the lively Kingsley Coman.
56 minutes: Muller stretches and puts an effort over from close range. It is all Bayern now and they are causing Villarreal panic every time they go forward. Credit to Nagelsmann for clearly pumping his players up at the break. They have come out with much more intensity and fully deserve their goal.

52 minutes: GOAL!!! LEWANDOWSKI!!!!
Bayern are ahead on the night and level on aggregate. Lewandowski finds space on the edge of the area from a ball from a Muller pass and his shot finds the net via the post.
50 minutes: This has been a lot better from Bayern. Much more intensity. Tremendous run to byline from Sane is pulled back to Dayot Upamecano who blazes well over when well placed.
46 minutes: Musiala gets in behind the Villarreal defence from a Sane pass but he doesn’t control it and Rulli just about gets it away. But promising from Bayern immediately after the restart.
Second half starts: We are back under way at the Allianz Arena. No changes for either side and Villarreal, having kept Bayern quiet for 135 minutes of this tie already just need to do it for 45 minutes more. Sounds simple on paper but in reality this is going to be a very half for Emery’s men.
Half-time: 0-0 and it is as you were still and Bayern now have only 45 minutes to save their hopes of a seventh European Cup success and Villarreal are just a half away from the semi-finals.
Bayern have had plenty of pressure but have had to rely on crosses from the flanks as Villarreal have blocked the midfield well, with Capoue excellent again in the centre of the park.
Villarreal will be aggrieved that Lewandowski is still on the pitch after he could have easily had a second yellow card for a daft challenge just moments after getting his first caution.
See you in 15 minutes for the second half.
Plenty of chances, not enough goals. Let’s turn it around.

40 minutes: Golden chance for Villarreal to have some breathing space. Danjuma escapes on left flank but he blazes wide. However, replays show he would have flagged off for offside if he had found the net.
35 minutes: Lewandowski is a very lucky boy. Just seconds after getting his first yellow card he really should have a second one and be off the pitch after catching Albiol a second time. Referee Slavko Vincic is already running down the pitch in the other direction and clearly missed the incident. A big let off for Lewandowski and Bayern.

33 minutes: Lewandowski has had little impact in front of goal so far tonight but he is the first player booked as he leaves a foot in on Villarreal’s Raul Albiol. Fair decision and Albiol gets back to his feet after some treatment.
30 minutes: Musiala has Bayern’s first effort on target as his header is straight at Rulli. Villarreal are content to keep the midfield tight and allow Bayern space on the flanks. But that is dangerous as Bayern’s crossing has been decent and the law of averages is if enough balls go in the box eventually one will fall their way.
25 minutes: Midway through the first half and the good news for Villarreal is they still have their one-goal lead in the tie. The bad news is Bayern are definitely warming up to their task and are beginning to win more of the midfield duels and are really getting Sane into the game nicely.
20 minutes: Bayern are upping the tempo and Nagelsmann is nodding contently from the touchline. Jamal Musiala gets down the left and cuts into the box, but his dangerous ball flashes across the goal with no one at the far post to get on the end of it.
15 minutes: Bayern are relying heavily on the ball to Sane on the right and hoping the former Manchester City man can do something. He starts a move which ends in a scramble after Goretzka’s pass finds Muller in space, but the German’s touch lets him down.
10 minutes: So far so good for Villarreal. Although they do have a scare when a cross to the far post finds Sane, and his effort is blocked away with his legs by Rulli.
5 minutes: Villarreal have started confidently, happy to spray the ball around and keep possession, acting like a team without any real hurry. Which they are, to be fair, with the one-goal advantage. But a fine ball from Etienne Capoue finds Gerard Moreno on the right and he cuts in and drills a shot just wide. But encouraging stuff from the Spaniards.
2 minutes: Sane finds space on the right and his cross finds Thomas Muller in the middle. Muller does not catch his shot cleanly and its easy meat for Geronimo Rulli in the Villarreal goal. It looked offside live and unsurprisingly it is flagged offside.
Kick-off: We have started at the Allianz Arena.
3 minutes to KO: Teams are out on the pitch. A reminder of the scenarios. Villarreal draw or win and they are through. If Bayern win by one goal in 90 minutes then we go to extra time. If they win by two or more then they proceed on to the semi-finals.
10 minutes to KO: Villarreal’s immediate objective will be to make a solid start and avoid conceding an early goal. But they face a tall order as Bayern have proved prolific in the Champions League at home and have scored at least two goals in the first half of all their previous four games in the competition at the Allianz Arena this season.
How Villarreal fare in trying to buck that trend will define the night one suspects.
20 minutes to KO: Former Bayern midfielder Owen Hargreaves is among the pundits on BT Sport and he has given his backing to manager Nagelsmann who has had some criticism from some quarters from the club’s fans over a season that has had a few misfires.
“He’s done a good job in my opinion and there is a lot to like about what he has done,” said Hargreaves. “I think they will go on and win tonight, especially if they get an early goal.”
35 minutes to KO: Pictures on BT Sport’s coverage are already showing the Allianz Arena filling up nicely. The atmosphere is building up and the home supporters will know they have a big role to play here in willing their team on to a place in the last four for the eighth time in 11 years.
There are Villarreal fans in Munich of course but the fans back in Spain are also showing plenty of colour.

45 minutes to KO: If Bayern are going to do this tonight and triumph it will be a surprising if Robert Lewandowski is not at the forefront of things for the German champions.
He has 12 goals to his name in the competition already and the Pole scored the winner from the penalty spot on Saturday in the 1-0 league win over Augsburg.
He scored a hat-trick in their last-16 second leg 7-1 win over Salzburg when they had come into the game with the tie delicately balanced at 1-1. What Bayern would give for another night like that tonight?
60 minutes to KO: We also have the Villarreal side who are aiming to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League for only the second time, following in the footsteps of the 2006 side that got to the last four before losing to Arsenal.
Unsurprisingly Emery is sticking with the same 11 that triumphed in the first leg and shut out Bayern. If they can do it again tonight they are the semis.
Here are the 1️⃣1️⃣ players who will try and make history!

65 minutes to KO: We have the Bayern team for tonight. There are two changes from last week’s first-leg loss with Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka coming in for Alphonso Davies and Serge Gnarby.

85 minutes to KO: Villarreal will not be afraid of the task ahead given some of their impressive European performances in the recent past. Unai Emery’s men have shown a real grit in Europe that belies their seventh place in the domestic La Liga table at home.
They are the reigning Europa Liga champions after winning on penalties against Manchester United after a goalless stalemate. They set up this clash with Bayern after a 3-0 away win at Juventus in the last 16 saw them go through on 4-1 aggregate.
So the Spaniards definitely have it in their locker to frustrate Bayern and it could be a night of having to be patient for Julian Nagelsmann’s men.
100 minutes to KO: Not long now until we know the teams for tonight. This is only Villarreal’s second ever trip to the Allianz Arena for a competitive match.
They lost 3-1 there in November 2011 in a group game with Franck Ribery netting twice and Mario Gomez also on target for Bayern. A repeat of that tonight and it is Bayern who go through to the semi-finals and a date with either Liverpool or Benfica.

Two hours to KO: Good evening! All set for a big night at the Allianz Arena? Bayern Munich have some serious work to do if they are to reach the semi-finals and stay on track for their bid to win the tournament for a seventh time.
Villarreal hold an one-goal lead have prevailed 1-0 in last week’s first leg thanks to Arnaut Danjuma’s goal after eight minutes.
Bayern have a 100 per cent record at home in the Champions League this season so will be confident they can by the two clear goals they need to get through. Not long now to find out if they can do it.

Bayern Munich vs. Villareal betting odds
Goals may be hard to come by in this match, with Villarreal heading to Germany to defend a lead. There is the possibility for the game to go to extra time, and possibly even penalties, if Bayern win by just one goal.
Lewandowski is famed for his performances on these big occasions, and you wouldn’t be surprised if he was to pull something spectacular out of the bag once again.
