Atletico Madrid vs. Manchester City live score, updates & highlights from Champions League quarter-final
Manchester City will look to take a step closer to lifting the Champions League for the first time when they bid to reach the semi-finals at the expense of Atletico Madrid.
Pep Guardiola’s men take a one-goal to the Wanda Metropolitano for the second leg of their quarter-final after Kevin De Bruyne bagged the only goal of the game a week ago in Manchester.
Last season’s runners-up in the competition come into the match on the back of a thrilling 2-2 draw at home to title rivals Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday that has kept them top of the Premier League by a point.
But the Champions League remains the one major trophy to have eluded them in their history. Guardiola, who won the tournament as Barcelona head coach in 2008 and 2011, is also anxious us to win the competition again himself having been unable to win it for a third time at Bayern Munich or with City, at least until now.
Atletico have reached the final of the competition three times. They lost to Real Madrid in 2014 and 2016, having previously suffered a heavy aggregate defeat in the European Cup final of 1974.
It will be their city rivals who they would meet in the semi-finals if they do manage to overturn their deficit against City, with Madrid awaiting the victors in the last four after they beat Chelsea 5-4 on aggregate.

Atletico Madrid vs. Manchester City live commentary & highlights
25 minutes: Felipe finally goes in the book. He fouls De Bruyne and before referee Siebert has even reached for the card he is being harangued by Felipe and his Atletico teammates. Given what he did to Foden earlier he is lucky not to be in more trouble right now.
23 minutes: Midway through the first half. In terms of goalmouth action not much has gone on. But this has been fun. Atletico are tenacious as you’d expect and City are looking comfortable on the ball. The first goal tonight is becoming more and more critical to defining where this tie will develop.
21. A steady start in Madrid! 💪

18 minutes: Neither goalkeeper has had a save to make yet but City keeper Ederson shows he is wide awake as he is off his line fast and clears a ball with his head from outside the box to deal with an Atletico counter-attack.
15 minutes: Replays of Felipe’s challenge on Foden make it even more staggering that there wasn’t a yellow card. The incident drew blood and the England forward has had his head bandaged up but he will remain on the pitch with Jack Grealish warming up on the touchline just in case he is needed soon.
13 minutes: Atletico’s physicality was a talking point in the first leg and it has not taken long to rear its head again here. Felipe goes through the back of Foden and catches him on the back of his head on an aerial challenge and it is a surprise he only gets a talking to and nothing more from the German referee Daniel Siebert.
10 minutes: Chance for City. John Stones gets on the end of Kevin de Bruyne’s near-post corner but can’t keep his header down. It was clean contact so the England defender should have done better.
8 minutes: Owen Hargreaves on BT Sport had predicted beforehand that this would be like a game of chess. Atletico have to win but they are not going crazy just yet in terms of pushing men forward. It is critical they do not concede at the other end so this has been a tight start with both sides sizing each other up.
5 minutes: Encouraging start from Atletico. They have both up City’s play a couple of times with some good pressing and an early cross from Joao Felix causes some uncertainty for the visitors with Kyle Walker forced to make a vital clearance.
Kick off: We are under way at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium and the noise is raucous to say the least. The Atletico fans are up for this big time. Can their players deliver?
10 minutes to KO: Not long to go now. Just to reiterate a draw or a City win and it is Guardiola’s side through to face Real Madrid in the semi-finals.
Finishing touches! 💪

If Atletico are ahead on the night by one goal after 90 minutes we go to extra time. Two goals or more ahead and it is the La Liga champions who will get to take on their city rivals.
25 minutes to KO: You have to go back to 2017 and losing to Monaco in the last 16 for the last time that City have not gone through after having the first-leg lead in a knockout tie in the Champions League.
Guardiola will have one eye on Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final with Liverpool and their remaining seven games in the Premier League and will expect his players to qualify comfortably in 90 minutes so he can continue looking forward at the challenges ahead.
30 minutes to KO: As Hoddle eluded the atmosphere is a little bit tasty and City get quite the welcome from the home supporters when they arrive on the pitch to warm up ahead of the game.

40 minutes to KO: BT Sport have started their coverage in the UK and former England manager Glenn Hoddle is pitch side as part of the preview.
He remarks he feels “an edge” from the Atletico fans who are already making a lot of noise despite the players being yet to come out for the warm up.
“I think it is important City start well, don’t give anything away in the first 20 minutes and don’t allow Atletico to give their fans anything to get behind,” added Hoddle.
55 minutes to KO: As mentioned earlier Atletico must score at least once tonight to have any hope of getting through to the semi-finals.
But that might be easier said than done as City are yet to concede a goal in the knockout stages of the competition. They won 5-0 on aggregate against Sporting in the last 16 and shut out Atletico in the first leg of this tie last week.
So Atletico face a tough ask to prevent City getting to the semi-finals for the second successive season.
70 minutes to KO: And now City too, with Guardiola predictably changing things up. From the side that won the first leg last Tuesday at the Etihad Stadium in come Walker and Phil Foden, with Ake and Raheem Sterling missing out.

75 minutes to KO: We have the Atletico team for tonight. Just one change from the first leg for Simeone as Thomas Lemar comes in for Sime Vrsaljko. The move is expected to see Marcos Llorente move out to the right in a wing-back role as Atletico seek to find a way past City’s backline.

85 minutes to KO: Atletico fans like their colour and aren’t afraid of a few smoke bombs and it looks as if a few have been set off, judging by the tweet below, to welcome their players to the stadium ahead of the match.

90 minutes to KO: Not long now until we know the teams for tonight. As usual the challenge with City is trying to second guess what Guardiola is going to with. He himself joked last week over his tendency to “over-think” things, something that has definitely hurt City in this competition in the past.
He made three changes from the first leg for Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool as Kyle Walker, Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus came in for Nathan Ake, Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez.
With an eye to a FA Cup semi-final with Liverpool on Saturday, and the fact City only have to draw this to proceed, will Guardiola make sizeable changes?
100 minutes to KO: It is pretty remarkable that Atletico are in the quarter-final of the Champions League. Not because of the size of the club compared to others in Europe. But rather the fact that they have yet to win at home at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in the competition this season.
They managed to squeak out of Group B with only one point picked up on home turf. They lost to Liverpool (3-2) and AC Milan (2-1) with a stalemate coming against Porto (0-0).
In the last 16 they drew 1-1 with Manchester United at home in the first leg before going through with a 1-0 success at Old Trafford thanks to Renan Lodi’s strike.
Atletico must win on the night against City to have any chance of going through. 1-0 after 90 minutes, or any kind of one-goal success, takes it to extra time. Two or better and it is them through to the semi-finals. A draw or a defeat and it is City who prevail.

👀 What will happen here?#UCL— UEFA Champions League (@ChampionsLeague) April 13, 2022
Two hours to kickoff: Well, here we are. Can Atletico, who so often under Diego Simeone have proven to be a thorn to some of the most established European sides, do it again? They are big underdogs going into the second leg of their quarter-final Champions League tie with Premier League leaders Manchester City.
They only trail City 1-0 on aggregate after last week’s first leg at the Etihad Stadium, but such is the impressive form of Pep Guardiola’s men that it is hard to see how Atletico can prevent the English side marching on to the semi-finals and a date with Real Madrid.
We should know the line-ups in 45 minutes or so, which will give us a better idea of how Simeone and Guardiola plan to tackle this.

Atletico Madrid vs. Man City predicted lineups
Diego Simeone, who has guided Atletico to the final twice, in 2014 and 2016, will bring Joao Felix back into the lineup after resting him during Saturday’s surprise 1-0 loss at struggling Mallorca.
Koke was substituted after 45 minutes against Mallorca, but that appeared to be with one eye on the City clash, and the fact Atletico’s captain has just returned to action after recovering from a thigh injury.
Atletico Madrid predicted lineup (5-3-2): Oblak (GK) — Lodi, Reinildo, Gimenez, Savic, Vrasljko — Koke, Kondogbia, Llorente — Griezmann, Felix
As usual with Guardiola, the challenge is trying to second-guess how City will start with their huge depth of options.
He wrong-footed experts against Liverpool on Sunday by giving Gabriel Jesus a first league start since January 1, but he is likely to bring back Riyad Mahrez for the game in Spain.
Kyle Walker missed the first leg through suspension, but will return at right-back after impressing against Liverpool.
Manchester City predicted lineup (4-3-3): Ederson (GK) — Walker, Laporte, Stones, Cancelo — Rodri, Silva, De Bruyne — Mahrez, Sterling, Foden

Atletico Madrid vs. Man City betting odds
In their last 19 outings across all competitions, City have only conceded more than one goal in a game twice, so will be optimistic they can maintain their advantage over Atletico.
Simeone will hope Felix and Antoine Griezmann can step up on Wednesday as goals have not been easy for Atletico to come by in the Champions League on home turf this season. Only three have come in four matches – two being in a 3-2 loss to Liverpool in the group stage.
