4-time All-Star could betray Mets and join Yankees if Juan Soto lands in Queens
The New York Mets are actively pursuing Juan Soto and seem like real contenders to land him. However, spending big on him could mean one of their own superstars could join the New York Yankees.
While listing players the Yankees can sign if Juan Soto leaves, FanSided’s Christopher Kline noted that if Soto leaves it will likely be for the Mets. He urged the Yankees to pivot and sign Pete Alonso if that happens.
“Let’s be real: if Juan Soto leaves the Yankees, it’s probably to sign with the Mets,” wrote Kline. “That is a tough blow to the Yankees, but it opens a window of opportunity to use their considerable financial resources on multiple stars, rather than a single superstar. Pete Alonso’s market is potentially waning as an “aging” first baseman with limited defensive equity. That presents the Yankees with a chance to get revenge on the Mets by swiping a Queens fan favorite — potentially on a contract well below “market value.”
Spotrac projects Alonso to sign a six-year, $174 million deal in free agency. The Mets likely would not sign both superstars and in this case, the Yankees would end up with the cheaper option. Losing Alonso would be a big blow to the Mets regardless of where he goes, but landing in the Bronx sounds like a worst-case scenario.
Alonso is one of the best sluggers in the league. In six seasons with the Mets, he has 226 home runs, 586 RBIs and four All-Star selections. He has expressed his love for New York. If the Mets choose Soto over him it would not be hard to see him with the Yankees. He clearly fills a need at first base for the team as well.
